The provider regularly assessed and monitored the quality of care provided at Castle View. Feedback from people and their relatives was encouraged and was used to make improvements to the service. Staff were appropriately trained and had the right skills to provide the care people needed. They received a thorough induction when they started working for the home and demonstrated a good understanding of their role and responsibilities. Staff had completed training to ensure the care and support provided to people was safe and effective to meet their needs. At this inspection we found the evidence continued to support the rating of good and there was no evidence or information from our inspection and ongoing monitoring that demonstrated serious risks or concerns.

Appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work and these were undertaken by the providers qualified human resource officer. Staff were able to attend team meetings and told us the organisation were supportive and provided opportunities for development. Medical care from a qualified nurse, and treatment for residents with illness or injuries. If this service has not had a CQC inspection since it registered with us, our judgement may be based on our assessment of declarations and evidence supplied by the service. So, if they can't deal with any particular medical condition, they refer the patient to the specialized hospital for tests, treatment, or to see a consultant with specialist knowledge.

Staff followed these plans, which helped to ensure people received care in the way they preferred. The environment was well maintained and equipment was serviced regularly when appropriate. Staff used personal protective equipment when required. Risks had been identified, assessed and there were safety measures in place to keep people safe. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. There were sufficient staff on duty to support people safely. The service had completed the necessary recruitment checks to make sure suitable staff were employed. The bedrooms are arranged over three floors – with a lift giving easy access to all – and residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their own photographs and other items of sentimental value.

The care home has been operating for more than seven years. In the last report by the CQC from August 2018, the care home received an overall rating of good. Set on the outskirts of Salisbury, with views over historic Old Sarum, Castle View is a highly regarded home with comfortable accommodation for up to 25 people, and has 24-hour on site registered nurses available. Bradbury House
People had individual care plans that had been personalised. The home provides accommodation over three floors which were accessed by a lift. The service had eight rooms that had been designated for ‘intermediate care’. People could access ‘intermediate care’ from hospital to receive rehabilitation for a short period of time.
It monitors and inspects services, to make sure they are safe, effective and provide high-quality care. It is the fundamental ethos that those service users who live in the home should be able to do so in accordance with the homes statement of values. It is the objective of the home that all service users shall live in a clean and safe environment and be treated with respect and sensitivity to their individual needs and abilities. Staff will be responsive to the individual needs of service users and will provide the appropriate degree of care to assure the highest possible quality of life within the home. People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available.

We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection . SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. Staff understood the needs of the people they were providing care for. People’s needs were set out in care plans they had been involved in developing.
This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met. We looked at four care records which confirmed people’s mental capacity status had been assessed by the registered manager prior to the person receiving care. There was signed consent for information about the person’s health to be shared with third parties, for example, their GP or other healthcare professionals in an emergency. Where needed and appropriate the service made referrals to external healthcare professionals in a timely way.
Examples of comments people told us included, “The staff are all lovely.” “I’m spoilt all the time”. “It’s good in here and we see the manager all the time”. People told us they felt safe when receiving care and were involved in developing and reviewing their care plans. Systems were in place to protect people from abuse and harm and staff knew how to use them. That’s really important to me to feel comfortable” and “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, I feel safe here”.
